Chhattisgarh is a state of prospects. Endowed with abundance of forest and mineral resources, it has great prospects of industrial development. Rich in minerals like Iron-ore, Bauxite, Coal, Lime-stone and being power surplus state, there is tremendous scope for Steel and allied industries, Aluminum industries and Cement plants in the state. The state is surging ahead in the path of development. Being centrally located, mineral rich and power surplus state, it has caught attention of investors all over the country, and also abroad, to establish their industry in the state.Beside imparting technical education for effectively exploiting the abundant natural resources, the Directorate of Technical Education is committed for ascertaining value based quality education and for facilitating planned development of research and development (R&D) work.

The courses of Engineering, Technology, Management, Architecture, Computer Science and Pharmacy have been included under technical education. At present there are 3 Government Engineering Colleges, 3 Autonomous-Self Financed Colleges and 26 Private Engineering Colleges in the state. These colleges have a total intake capacity of around 10,000 seats and they conduct various undergraduate and postgraduate courses in Engineering. Along with that, there are a total of 13 Government Polytechnics in the state and it is expected that the number will increase in the coming years. The present intake capacity of Polytechnic institutes in the state is 2385. In addition to that there are M.Tech./ME, MBA, MCA, D.Pharmacy, B.Pharmacy and M.Pharmacy courses in the state, which are being run by private sector.

There is Architecture course in one of the private colleges of the state, having admission capacity of 40. All these courses are approved by respective apex bodies (AICTE/COA/PCI).

All these technical institutes are affiliated to Chhattisgarh Swami Vivekanand Technical University, Bhilai (except ITGGU and Dr C.V. Raman Engineering College which are affiliated to Guru Ghasidas University and Dr C.V. Raman University, Kargiroad Kota respectively). The admissions to the institutes are done according to merit marks of Pre Engineering Test (PET), conducted by an autonomous body, C.G. Professional Examination Board (Chhattisgarh Vyavsayik Pariksha Mandal) and of AIEEE, conducted by Central Board of Secondary Education, New Delhi.

To cater the increased need of manpower due to expansion of industrial sector it is proposed to open at least one Polytechnic in each of the districts of the state. At present six districts in the state, namely, Kanker, Dantewada, Jashpur, Bijapur, Narayanpur and Korea do not have any Engineering College or Polytechnic. Proposals are in pipeline for opening new Polytechnics in these districts.

An Institute of Technology under Public Private Partnership (PPP) is being established in Korba, the "Power City" of the state. The institute will start functioning from the session 2008-09. Similarly, a Polytechnic is proposed to be opened by National Mineral Development Corporation (NMDC) at Dantewada district of Bastar region. The existing Polytechnics are proposed to be equipped with necessary infrastructure and other facilities along with increase in number of courses.

To match the footsteps of contemporary time and current trend, innovative areas of technology have been introduced in the syllabi of academic institutions. New Engineering Colleges and Polytechnics are likely to be added to a considerable number to fulfill the requirement of existing and upcoming industries in the state as well as the country. This has to be done by making technical education more and more practical oriented with qualified and competent faculty and by up gradation of laboratories. The Directorate of Technical Education is committed to this.
