The technical skilled educational institutions┬аwere started in 1943, by the name "Occupational Institutes". Later, these are renamed as "Polytechnics"(multiple technical skills/many technical skills). All these Polytechnics were working under "Public Instruction Department". As the number of Polytechnics and Technical degree colleges were increased, the new department called "Department of Technical Education " came into existance in 1959.

The Commissionerate of Technical Education ensures a planned development of technical education in the state consistent with the policies of State and the Nation. The department is committed to provide need based, quality technical education and professional human resources to the industry, business and community. The Department manages 85 government, 44 aided and 170 private polytechnics, 14 govt Engineering Colleges and 6 Junior Technical Schools.┬а┬а

The Department of Technical Education is the highest policy making body in the field of Technical Education in Karnataka. Its primary function is planning of developing Technical Education in the state and the Board of Technical Examination is responsible┬аto conduct Diploma/Post diploma /Tailoring examination and award Diploma/Post Diploma/certificate to the eligible candidates.┬а ┬а ┬а┬а ┬а ┬а ┬а ┬а┬а┬а┬а ┬а

  1. Promote Planned, and sustainable development of Technical Education in the State consistent with National and State policies.
  2. Design need based programs for Diploma institutions and ensures adequate human resource and infrastructural facilities for effective delivery of the curriculum.
  3. Ensure objective evaluation and certification systems for students, programs and institutions.
  4. Collaborate with AICTE, MHRD, NITTTR, Universities, industries and other employer agencies and Directorates of other states.
  5. Plan long term and annual budget allocations for Technical Education sector of the State and ensure proper distribution and optimum utilisation of funds.
  6. Prescribe norms with proper focus on quality and social justice for┬а ┬а(a) Admission of students to Technical Education and┬а (b) Recruitment, Posting, Training and Development of Staff.
  7. Provide opportunities for all-round development of students and staff and also provide placement, grievance redressal and counseling services.
  8. To maintain good relations with the public and all institutions by being responsive to the needs of its stake holders.

Primary Functions of the Commissionerate

1) To administer, supervise, control and plan programs for the development of Technical Educational Institutions in the state both at Degree and Diploma levels.

2) To formulate Engineering studies and courses, recognition of new courses to examine and recommend for starting of New Institutions in the State both at the Degree levels and Diploma level.

3) To conduct inspections and periodical reviews of existing Technical Educational Institutions to maintain the standard of Education.

4) To conduct the diploma public examinations and to award the Diploma certificates to successful candidates.

5) To sanction academic approval for Govt. and Aided Institutions.

6) To provide suitable norms and procedures for selection of students for admission of students to Polytechnics.

7) To release grants and other facilities to aided institutions.

8) To select and depute teaching faculty for higher education.

9) Inspection of administrative and academic procedures, evaluation of infrastructure facilities of technical institutions.
