The Technical Education Department, Manipur was created in 1973.The Controller of Technical Education is the Head of Department which is located in the campus of the Government Polytechnic at Takyelpat, Imphal. The Office of the controller of technical education is mandated to administer and run the existing Government Polytechnic at Takyelpat, Imphal which has now been designated as the Government polytechnic for Imphal west District, subsequent to the State Govt., Department of Higher & Technical Education having obtained approval and fundings for setting up of 1 (one) Government Polytechnic in each of the remaining District in the State; Planning & Implementation of Expansion & Development of the existing Govt. Polytechnic, Establishment of new Government Polytechnics in every Districts in the State and running these technical institutions effectively and efficiency, Promotion of Technical Education including Engineering Courses for nomination of state Government nominees to various Government Engineering Colleges located in various parts of the country through allotment of seats by Ministry of HRD, Govt. Of India which were done earlier through annual conduct of Entrance Tests followed by Counselling and are now done through the All India JEE Tests, and any other work of the Government relating to Technical Education as may be assigned from time to time
