Hai mai immaginato che le lastre di pavimentazione sotto i tuoi piedi potessero generare elettricità? Se sono come quelli realizzati dalla startup britannica Pavegen, allora potrebbero esserlo. Questi incredibili dispositivi vengono attualmente applicati in numerosi settori, come trasporti, istruzione, vendita al dettaglio, intrattenimento e persino nella creazione di città intelligenti. Sono già stati applicati in progetti in tutto il mondo, ma cosa li rende così eccitanti?

La forza del passo
Le piastrelle di Pavegen sono composte da 3 componenti principali: un generatore elettromagnetico, una piastrella composita a forma di triangolo e l'”utente”. Quando l'utente sale sulla piastrella, provoca uno spostamento verticale nel generatore, che a sua volta provoca la produzione di 2 sottoprodotti, ovvero energia elettrica e dati.

Entrambi possono essere messi a frutto dalle città intelligenti che li stanno impiegando, così come dagli acquirenti commerciali e aziendali che li collocano all'interno dei propri progetti sia temporanei che permanenti. L'idea è quella di creare un'esperienza più coinvolgente quando si cammina per una strada altrimenti apparentemente normale.

Con anche i piccoli tratti di strada convertiti in piastrelle Pavegen esistenti, l'energia generata è sufficiente per generare, ad esempio, effetti del canto degli uccelli sulle strade urbane per migliorare l'atmosfera, nonché energia sufficiente per alimentare le luci notturne per rendere la strada più vivace. Questo è già stato fatto in una delle zone dello shopping più trafficate di Londra, appena fuori Oxford Street.

Applicazioni pratiche
Innanzitutto, la parte principale della visione alla base di Pavegen è creare energia sostenibile che abbia vantaggi reali e attuabili. Il modo migliore per raggiungere questo obiettivo pur rimanendo strategico con il posizionamento delle tessere è posizionare le tessere in luoghi che hanno un traffico pedonale integrato.

Ad esempio, il Dipartimento dei trasporti del Regno Unito e il Central Bedfordshire Council hanno installato una sezione di piastrelle proprio fuori dalla stazione ferroviaria di Leighton Buzzard, un trafficato snodo di pendolari con treni giornalieri pieni diretti da e per London Euston.

Una semplice installazione genera non solo enormi quantità di energia off-grid che può quindi essere immagazzinata e utilizzata senza aggiungere stress alla rete, ma aiuta anche la comunità con dati utili su quanta energia viene generata per persona, quante persone la attraversano , e altro ancora. Applicazioni commerciali/di intrattenimento
Qualsiasi evento può essere reso più interattivo e creativo utilizzando la tecnologia delle piastrelle Pavegen. È stato sfruttato al meglio durante il Festival delle luci di Berlino del 2017, durante il quale Pavegen e Google hanno collaborato per creare il "Percorso di luce". Mentre gli utenti camminavano sulle tessere Pavegen, le luci colorate nei colori caratteristici di Google si illuminavano lungo le pareti lungo il percorso, creando modelli e stili unici in base a come si camminava, si ballava, si saltava o si correva lungo il percorso piastrellato.

They’ve already been applied in projects across the world, but what is it that makes them so exciting?

The power of the footstep

Pavegen’s tiles are composed of 3 main components: an electromagnetic generator, a composite tile in the shape of a triangle, and the “user.” When the user steps onto the tile, it causes vertical displacement in the generator, which in turn causes the production of 2 by-products, namely electrical energy and data.

Both of these can be put to good use by the smart cities that are employing them, as well as the commercial and corporate buyers who place them within their own projects both temporary and permanent. The idea is to create a more engaging experience when walking down an otherwise seemingly ordinary street.

With even the small sections of street converted into Pavegen tiles that exist, the power generated is enough to generate, for example, birdsong effects on urban streets to improve the atmosphere, as well as enough stored energy to power nighttime lights to make the street more lively. This has already been done in one of London’s busiest shopping areas right off Oxford Street.

Practical applications

First and foremost, the main part of the vision behind Pavegen is to create sustainable power that has real and actionable benefits. The best way to achieve this while still being strategic with tile placement is to put the tiles in places that have built-in foot traffic.

For instance, the UK’s Department for Transport and Central Bedfordshire Council installed a section of tiles right outside Leighton Buzzard train station, a busy commuter hub with packed daily trains heading to and from London Euston.

A simple installation generates not only huge amounts of off-grid power that can then be stored and used without adding strain to the grid, but also helping the community with useful data on how much power is generated per person, how many people walk across it, and more. Commercial/Entertainment applications

Any event can be made more interactive and creative using the Pavegen tile technology. It was put to good use during Berlin’s 2017 Festival of Lights where Pavegen and Google worked together to create the “Light Path.” As users walked on the Pavegen tiles, colored lights in Google’s signature colors lit up along walls lining the path, which created unique patterns and styles according to how you walked, danced, jumped, or ran down the tiled pathway.

These interactive applications can seem a little frivolous on the surface, but it’s all about demonstrating that this technology makes the human footstep into a more powerful and meaningful thing.
